Bibi Ka Maqbara: The Taj of the Deccan
Bibi Ka Maqbara, Aurangabad – Complete Travel Guide to the Taj of the Deccan. Bibi Ka Maqbara is one of the most iconic historical monuments in India, located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Bibi Ka Maqbara was built between 1651 and 1661.
Often compared with the Taj Mahal, this beautiful mausoleum attracts history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and tourists from across the world. While the Taj Mahal was a grand gesture of a husband's love for his wife, this monument is a tribute from a son to his mother.
Bibi Ka Maqbara was built by the son of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, Prince Azam Shah, in memory of his mother, Dilras Banu Begum (posthumously known as Rabia-ud-Daurani).

Architecture: A Study in Contrast
Unlike Akbar Ka Makbara in Sikandra or Jahangir Ka Maqbara in Lahore, Bibi Ka Maqbara reflects architectural restraint rather than imperial opulence.
The Materials
While the Taj Mahal is pure marble, the Maqbara uses marble only for the main dome and the upper parts of the mausoleum. The rest is finished with polished basalt and high-quality lime plaster, designed to shimmer like marble under the sun.

The Proportions
It is smaller and more vertical than the Taj, giving it a leaner, more delicate appearance.
Inside Bibi Ka Maqbara, visitors can see the marble cenotaph of Dilras Banu Begum enclosed by beautifully carved jaali screens. Soft natural light filters into the central chamber, creating a peaceful atmosphere. The actual grave lies in an underground chamber, following Islamic burial traditions. The interiors reflect simplicity and restraint, unlike the grandeur seen inside the Taj Mahal.
The Gardens
The tomb is set in a classic Charbagh (four-fold garden) layout, featuring water channels and fountains that create a cooling oasis in the Deccan heat.

"Night view of Bibi Ka Maqbara offers a magical experience when history glows and silence speaks."
